Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
1. Schools are now putting harsher rules on the concept of bullying because they are now "becoming more and more aware of its negative impact on kids." (Carpenter, 2)

2. Though a lot of parents think that their children are not being bullied, a lot of "kids are dealing with bullying on some level on a dailt basis." (Carpenter, 7)

3. In the past, bullying was not a big issue and was just seen as something that happened to teenagers but "bullying is now recognized as an important contributor to youth violence and bullycide." (Carpenter, 7)

4. A lot of people assume that school shootings happen because the shooter themselves are not happy but a paper "concluded that bullying played a significant role in many school shootings." (Carpenter, 7)

5. Since "indirect bullying (hurtful gossip) is harder to detect" most school officials will not know how severe a situation is until a student comes up to them with evidence. (Carpenter, 25)

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Deborah Carpenter wrote this book when she found out that her son was being bullied when he was four years old and started writing this book to help other parents deal with their child being bullied. INTERVIEW.

1. Have you ever seen a lot of kids being bullied in a school enviroment? How?
I have seen a lot of verbal and cyber abuse. Rarely do I see physical abuse now because of the internet these days.
2. What do school officials/staff members usually do when a situation like that occurs?
We need the victim of the abuse to report it and name the bully and the witnesses. Then we start to gather the statements from all the witnesses to get a sense of the situation. Next, we have a meeting with the person who is doing the bullying and explain our harassment policy to them and their parents. Depending on the situation, suspension or expulsion can occur from this.
3. As a school staff member, do you feel that the children that are being bullied have a right to defend themselves in a physical manner?
Every person has a choice to make. Do I report it and talk to an adult about what is happening or do i protect myself? It all depends if the bully is attacking the victim because then of course I can understand why the victim may need to protect themselves.
4. Since my topic is the link between bullying and school shootings, do you think they are related based on how most teenagers react in a "revengeful" manner?
Well, there is probably a link between them. But it also depends on the emotional state of each individual and how long the abuse has been going on. If it has been going on for quite some time, then you always have to factor that into the equation.
5. During the course of when you have worked at a school, have children ever reacted in a violent manner towards the person who bullied them?
I have been a dean here for 8 years and I have not seen that.
6. In your opinion, have you seen children stick up for the victims of bullies or just stand back and watch it?
In most cases, children just stand back and watch it. I think it's because they do want to involve themselves and get picked on by that bully too. Very few times have I seen that children stick up for the victims.
7. Going back on my subject of school shootings, I found that most shooters have been bullied, so do you think that schools should have a harsher rule on trying to prevent bullying?
It all depends on the situation. You can't just kick a child out of school if we have a record of him bullying once or twice. We have to show that we tried to improve the situation and that we have documents of meeting with that student. Now, if that student violates the rules after we had a meeting with him/her, that is when we start to progress in our punishment.
8. Do you think that if students find out that school shootings can be prevented by not being a bully, bullying can decrease? Or is bullying always going to be around?
There is always going to be bullying because now that we have the internet it can be widespread and there is absolutely no way that we can stop cyber bullying. In my opinion, that is worse.
9. Do you find this sopic to be somewhat important or just something that can be brushed aside?
Whether it's little or a big incident, it needs to be dealt with before it gets bigger and bigger.
10. Since you graduated high school, how has bullying changed?
We always had altercations face to face. We never had this cyber bullying. If we needed to say something to someone, we would say it or get in a fight and that would be the end of it. But now that we have internet and youtube, we can post things up that can be harmful to a child and it will be up for everyone to see. Bullying has gotten worse over the years.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
1. During a child's teenage years, those are the years that "the pressures to partcipate in drug and alcohol abuse are the highest."
2. Some research has shown that "27% of teenagers has misused some drug each month".
3, This website shows that "there are many reasons why people turn to drugs" but that there can be alternatives instead of taking drugs or using alcohol.
4. A lot of "teenagers fail to recognize the consequences" when they take drugs or alcohol, it can affect their life on a "cellular level" and even hurt their family.
5. Depending on how much the person is intoxicated on alcohol it can "take 3 days to 2 weeks" just to get it out of their system, which ca be very painful to the person.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
This website brings people together so they can educate teenagers and parents on how to help themselves and their child. This can give people alternatives and inform them on what happens when they do take drugs or alcohol. This website has a lot of links on their page to help people out at home too.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
The purpose of this site is to educate people on drugs and alcohol and tries to help them see what can happen to teenagers if they do start to do something. There are sponsoring organizations that help with this site to get a better message to the world.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
The author does not gain anything from writing this website so there does seem like there is no attachment to it.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
There does seem like there is a bias opinion being formed but the author only wants people to realize that there are negative effects to doing drugs and alcohol.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
The author does not use any references so it does seem to take away from their credibilty.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?

I plan to use this source in my paper and also in my volunteer hourse of making a pamphlet with the alternatives that this website gave me.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
1. "Alcoholism and drugs can permanently damage the brain" of young teenagers which can affect them later on their life.
2. Since teenagers are more likely to get addicted, it is better to "treat them during this time of their life" since it is the most crucial time.
3. People usually have "underlying problems that must be addressed if they want to recover". This is why professors and doctors encourage group, peer discussions.
4. Some researchers think that "people who do not particiapte in drinking might not have enough friends to protect them from depression" and that it all relates to peer pressure.
5. In young adulthood, "substance abuse may be very common" and it affects the crucial time of self-development.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):
This website shows and helps to instruct teenagers and parents on what is happening to them. They explain why some teenagers and young adults will use drugs and alcohol to form some kind of escape from a emotional problem. They give a step by step on what people should do if they are addicted and want help, plus also gives out the links/ phone numbers to actual rehab centers.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
The author is not known in this artricle but the purpose of this site is to get people aware and educated on what is happening to drug and alcohol abusers. The CRC Health Group funds this site and it is said to be an "educational website".

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
The author does not gain anything from this besides to educate people on the problem. There does seem to be some lack of attachment since it does not include any personal stories, but straight facts.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
There seems to be no bias opinion because it displays both the negative and positive effects on people.

does the author cite refernces in the writing? do these add or take away from the credibility?
The author barely cite any references so it sort of adds to the credibility to the article.
How will you use this source in your project?
I plan to use this source on how people can learn how to "get over" an addiction from home and that there are resources out there for them that is only a click away.

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
1. According to Laura Nissen, these scared straight programs "increases offending behavior" in young teens.
2. Since there is "lack of research on these programs" the office of juvenile and deliquency prevention "won't fund" it.
3. Since there is a show called "Beyond Scared Straight" on A&E, there will be "pressure to replicate it in communities across the country."
4. According to Laura Nissen, these programs will be a "waste of taxpayer dollars."
5. People want to "invest in the variety of treatment and supportive services."

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

Laura Nissen is the program director of "Reclaiming Futures" and believes that these type of programs shown on tv will not work for the first time offenders. That it will actually make people more likely to commit a crime and will make people want to do crime. She believes that we are "moving backwards and not forward" with this situation.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?

The author is Laura Nissen is a speaker at multiple conventions and has researched exclusively on this topic. The purpose of this site though is to try to convince people how the "scared straight" programs do not work and that it is a waste of time.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?
She can be trying to gain recognition for her group, Reclaiming Futures, but she also truly believes that these programs do not work and that we should try to create more treatment centers instead to help people.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
The author is favoring the side that these programs will not help teens in the future and instead, they will encourage to commit crime.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
Yes the author does cite references from people that have done research on how data proves that teenagers commit more crimes. It does add to her credibility.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
I plan to use this source on my paper for the opposing view and give my audience two views on this topic.

<URL address> (ALL of it)

FIVE FACTS FROM THE SOURCE (Embedded):
1. The D.A.R.E program helps people "keep it real" and tell people how these prevetion programs can make people benefit from it.
2. In the D.A.R.E advisory board with the youth group is "composed of 50 members, one student per state", which can give other young people a chance to relate to them more.
3. "Drug and kids" is what every parent must face when their child hits the teenage years. This webiste can help parents see the symptoms of what their kids might have.
4. According to this website, "children around the world" would benefit from this program if they get the information early enough.
5. This program is "so successful" that most police agencies support it to the fullest.

Summary of Source (Three-Four Sentences of the Who, What, Where, Why, and How in your own words. NO OPINION):

This D.A.R.E program helps a lot of children see the side effects of what can happen to them. A police officer wanted to make children aware of the side effects and this particualr website can help both children and parents see the problems. This program is starting to be offered at a lot of police stations and school that support it.

Credibility of Source:
Author or Site: Who is the author? What training have they had? If there is no author, examine the site. What is the purpose of the site? Who funds the site?
The purpose of this site is to both make people aware of how drugs can affect people but also how you can volunteer your services to your community. This offers people to ask questions and gives them addresses of police stations to see how they can help.

Attachment: Does the author or site have anything to gain from writing this, or is it simply informative? For example, is it a cigarette business posting an article about the benefit of cigarettes, or is it a scientific community unaffiliated with the cigarette business?

The author does not gain anything from this website besides having an audience to get information out there. It is not necessarily a "scientific community" but just gives back to the community on the information of drugs and programs for children.

Bias: Do you detect a bias (a favoring of either side) in the author's writing?
I do not notice a bias opinion on this website but it only tells one side of the story rather than both of the addict's side, too.

References: Does the author cite references in the writing? If so, do these add or take away from the credibility?
No the author does not cite any references.

Use of Source: How will you use this source in your project?
They give out addresses and phone numbers on where you can send your questions if you need any help. So I plan on using this information and volunteer services to help in my powerpoint.
